Pennebaker gaat een concert registreren van de eerder genoemde band, en deze zal op YouTube te streamen zijn (en daarna nog een maand). Het gekozen concert is er eentje ten behoeve van de Red Hot Organization, een organisatie die strijd tegen AIDS en voor een goede voorlichting hiervoor. Het zal op 15 mei plaatsvinden in Brooklyn.
D.A. Pennebaker, geboren in 1925, is een voor een Oscar genomineerde documentairemaker die onder andere de epische film Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars heeft geregisseerd. Dit na de documentaire Don’t Look Back over een tour van Bob Dylan in de jaren 60. In 1994 werd hij genomineerd voor een Oscar voor zijn documentaire The War Room, waarin hij de campagne van Bill Clinton voor het presidentschap vastlegde. Hij zal het concert regisseren samen met zijn vrouw, Chris Hegedus. Het zal de eerste keer zijn dat dit duo een live registratie van een concert op film zet, laat staan eentje die direct zal streamen. Het concert zal voorafgegaan worden door een korte film van Pennebaker.
Het medium is ook opzienbarend. Want hoewel, ik, jij, je zus, je vader, en een marmottenkolonie YouTube gebruiken is het nu niet bepaald een medium waar Oscar winnaars zich veelvuldig mee bezig houden. Het heeft, net als Wikipedia, toch nog altijd een beetje een reputatie van niet serieus en och-daar-houden-wij-professionals-ons-toch-niet-mee-bezig. Het gebruik wordt toch een beetje gezien als indicatie van amateurisme tegenover professionalisme, want echte experts doen dit soort dingen niet. Nu zal Pennebaker hiermee geen kentering veroorzaken, maar het wordt in de komende vijf tot tien jaar interessant om te zien hoezeer YouTube ook op “serieuze” terreinen grond wint en wat de status ervan zal zijn in, let us say, 2025.
De frontman van The Killers, Brandon Flowers, zal een solo album gaan uitbrengen. En deze zal waarschijnlijk heel veel pit kennen, want het album heet Flamingo, vinnige creaturen zijn dat. Want de flamingo is voornamelijk roze om zijn affiniteit te tonen met de garnaal, en dat is vaak ook het laatste wat de garnaal denkt, hey, iemand die affiniteit met mij toont, waarna hij bruut verorbert wordt door de monstrueuze, hakkende, ehrm, snavel.
The Killers brachten way back when het album Hot Fuss uit, een zeer succesvolle plaat met enkele geweldige tracks. In mijn ogen is het vervolgens telkens wat minder gegaan, en misschien dat een solo album van de frontman weer nieuwe ideeën in het hoofd brengt van Flowers of de andere bandleden. Want iemand die tracks heeft gemaakt als ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘Andy, You’re a Star’, en ‘Midnight Show’ moet toch ergens nog een album in zich hebben dat in ieder geval ik leuk vind? Verder betrekken we hier nooit iets op onszelf hoor.
So yeah, wij gaan niet naar Lowlands. Persoonlijk als city boy heb ik wat meer weken nodig om me mentaal zover te krijgen dat ik veel geld uit geef voor iets wat mij meerdere dagen in een tent en tussen de public toilets doet belanden. Dat het jammer is spreekt voor zich, want Lowlands begint langzaam wat meer bands toe te voegen. Zo werd eerder al bekend dat de Amerikaanse band en personal favourite The National op het festival zal staan. De band zal in juli ook in Paradiso spelen (waar wij, gelukkig, wel bij zijn).
Nieuwere namen zijn Miike Snow, The Drums en Wallis Bird. Voor mensen die geen Lowlands kaartje hebben maar wel naar The Drums willen die hebben dan weer iets meer geluk dan fans van Miike Snow, want ook The Drums zullen in de komende maanden in Nederland staan, zij op meerdere plaatsen.

Danielle: Somehow, I feel like I'm listening to some psychedelic version of a cartoon theme song (in a good way). It's catchy as hell, so of course I love it. However, I feel the need to point out that these lyrics are the most un-sexy way to proposition a lady. Just thought I would warn all the guys out there; it won't work!

Ilse: Very much unlike Blaine's new haircut, I love this new song. It's typical Mystery Jets; sweet, catchy, poppy and just something that makes you feel good in a ‘Young Folks’-way; how can you possibly not whistle along? Not sure if the birds and bees with the STDs would feel the same though.

Craig: Cute, I guess, but far too sterile and straightforward for me. The lyrics are boring, the song structure is paint-by-numbers, and this style of pop has been done, done, DONE! I don't really listen to them much, but it sounds a bit like the New Pornographers... Zzzz. Nothing about this appeals to me. Down with boring, cheesy music!!

Stef: I would’ve gone for a cleaner sound for this kind of tune. I mean, if you go with whistling, that kind of chorus, a do-do-do-do-woop line (or whatever it is), there is no reason to go this kind of muddled way. Then go pop all together. Also, I find some of images coming from the lyrics not terribly aesthetic.

Robert Hood zal op 21 juni zijn album uitbrengen. Het album heet Omega Man, naar een film met Charlton Heston over een man die een biologische oorlog overleeft en dan de enige man op aarde nog is samen met wat zombie-like creatures (en als je denkt, goh, dat klinkt als een film met Will Smith, die is daar ook op gebaseerd). Eigenlijk is het sowieso niet geheel fictie, want af en toe stopt God even de aarde, en pakt hij er één iemand uit die hij dan in deze situatie plaatst. Het is een soort test situatie, de wereld is niet echt vergaan, maar dan kan God zien hoe de mens ervoor staat. Want zet een man in een vreemde context waar hij op zichzelf is aangewezen en dan kan je een beetje zien hoe de kwaliteiten van de mens geëvolueerd of gedevolueerd zijn. Hoe behendig is hij, wat voor slimme trucjes gebruikt hij, welke gadgets heeft de mens uitgevonden die echt nuttig zijn en een eerste levensbehoefte, en wat zijn de anxieties, de angsten, de fysieke ongemakken waar de mens onder gebukt gaat in een dergelijke situatie. Deze test situatie vind om de tien jaar plaats om het proces van de mens goed te kunnen vergelijken, en jezelf opgeven kan, maar niet in mei.
Robert Hood gaf aan dat het een soort van concept album is, want hij maakte dit album met het idee van deze film in zijn achterhoofd, en wat hij zou doen als hij een soundtrack zou moeten maken ervoor. Het album komt uit via M-Plant, wat Hood’s eigen label is.
Het nieuwe album van The Dead Weather, geheten Sea of Cowards, was afgelopen week te horen via een live feed. Maar niet via een stream, oh nee, maar je kon kijken naar een record player die het afspeelde, en dat 24 uur lang. Dus iedereen zat te staren naar dezelfde speler. En dat is een beetje raar, want wie doet dat nou? Een stream is veel gemakkelijker, dus er moet wat meer achter zitten. Een soort van hypnose, iedereen die kijkt naar hetzelfde plaatje, en dan nog naar een rond object dat draait ook! Nou, dan weet je het wel. Dus mocht iedereen plots in hoedjes lopen met levende hamsters erop geborduurd, dan weet je waar het aan lag!
Mocht je zo gelukkig zijn geweest deze enigszins verdachte luisterbeurt te hebben gemist maar je wilt het album toch horen dan is er maandag een nieuwe mogelijkheid. Om middernacht (6PM Eastern Time, dus je kan het zelf nog narekenen want ik heb het even uit mijn hoofd gedaan en zo paraat heb ik mijn tijd schema’s nou ook weer niet) zal de band het album integraal live spelen, en dit is te volgen op de MySpace van de band.

‘Hide Me’ by The Golden Filter (Peter, Bjorn & John remix)
Okay, I really really liked the Rory Phillips remix of this one, and with Peter, Bjorn and John behind the buttons you know you’ll at least get something quirky and weird. And that is clear from the starting point. This song in its original form is very Italo, very dreamy almost to a fault. This remix puts an end to that one, as the original song’s vibe takes until midway to come through. I like how they puzzled this one together. The screeching in the background, the simple, understated beat up front, along with some vocals which I think are male, so probably from Peter, Bjorn & John themselves rather than from The Golden Filter. The song takes on a completely different identity, and sometimes a remix kills the song with that, and sometimes a remix prolongs the song’s lifespan by putting it in a different context and giving it a different look. I think Peter, Bjorn & John did the latter.

Band of Skulls – Death By Diamonds and Pearls (Deluka Diamante remix)
Strong out of the gates, that’s what this one is. Rocking guitars, and it sounds like old fashioned rock and roll this one. It also fits the title and the lyrics, this kind of glam rock 70s sound. It is rather straight forward, rather simple, but rock was never about complexity was it? Well, sometimes it was, but not with this kind of three minute stompers. Admittedly, the disadvantage of straight forward is also that it lacks in depth, and I was thinking, oh, this is a nice song, but now it is going on rather long. That was at the two minute mark. So yeah, nice, but not something I’ll be listening to in 2014 probably.

Monarchy – It Must Be Love
This is my favourite new band ever since I had a listen to that Kitsuné sampler with an Octanes edit of Monarchy’s ‘Phoenix Alive’ track. Because that was firing on all cylinders. This is not the fastest horse on the track, not like ‘Phoenix Alive’, but it is still very easy on the ear. Sometimes it’s not rationality or anything, it is just the tone of the music and the voice that clicks personally, and that certainly is the case for me with this band. Will it be on heavy rotation much like that track on the Kitsuné sampler? No, not really. It’s not as catchy, and although I like the dreamy delivery of the lines, the repetition of the line “It must be love” begins to grate a tad because it is such an overrated sentence. It perhaps is better to throw a complete nonsense line in there because at least that sounds fresh and quirky, and a sentence like this certainly does not have any of those qualities. That’s the thing I guess, if you use lines common in every day life and even there they are sans meaning in which you don’t really communicate anything how can you expect them to work in a song, or literature for that matter? “It must be love”, what is that? What must be love, what is love, and why must “this” be it? Urgh.

Cold Cave – Life Magazine (Arthur Baker remix)
The noise comes marching in, but I do love that underneath the starting noise slowly but steadily the contours of something catchy and something you can hold onto becomes visible. When the song comes in, that’s where it really pops. Especially because you know it’s going to happen, that through the noise this butterfly will appear with which you can jump along. So when it happens, that’s good, that’s nice. I like that the song is marching in and then marches out at one point, though after the second “march” the track doesn’t stop but briefly evolves into a club beat thingy, after which the song appears again. Personally I wouldn’t have minded if that part wasn’t there, that the song would’ve just “marched out”, but regardless it is a nice take on the song.

Atari Teenage Riot – Activate
Well, you know, you probably like this or you don’t. I would advise that, even when you’re on the fence, don’t go near the stage when you decide to see them live, because I can just imagine how the first rows of an Atari Teenage Riot gig might look like. It is hard hitting, it is energetic, and it is screaming. So as said, probably, either you’re going mental or think, you know what, I’ll pass up on a gig possibility this time. Though I must admit, I would not be opposed to be watching the scene but, you know, from a balcony and with earplugs in so I don’t get the whole bucket load of noises.

Hurts – Better Than Love (Jamaica remix)
Oh generic beat warning. Or at least it begins with something terribly mundane. And that goes for the whole song really. It is so 80s synth that I’m not sure it really isn’t. “And it feels better than love” isn’t lyricism I really fancy, and as said, the synth tricks seem so common that I’m not sure this song actually adds to the musical landscape. Especially not with the singer simply belting out the same phrase over and over again, and one that says nothing at that (for more on this problem, read the write-up about the Monarchy song, which is a better song at that).
