Album review – Player Piano by Memory Tapes
When Dayve Hawk first appeared with his new, more electronic outfit it was kind of shrouded in mystery – multiple monikers, we didn’t know who was behind it, and there wasn’t any live playing either. Fast forward to now and the amount of monikers has been reduced to just a main one, namely Memory Tapes. Not only that, the whole mystery bonanza was not only inadvertent, but former Hail Social frontman Hawk was even slightly embarrassed by the hoopla that it had turned into. Now that the wave of mystery is gone though, the question is whether or not the appeal remains. If you weren’t seduced by the sounds on the debut, this album might not change your opinion much. However, even though Player Piano is still within the niche Hawk carved out for himself, it is a richer and a more versatile second outing.
