Weekly Froth #11 (with Joakim, Ron Basejam, Gospel Music)

The weekly froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy.

Track of the week: ‘Nothing Gold’ by Joakim
Fucking tune, seriously. It is not often that I start with a swear word, but hot damn, the Tiger Sushi man has delivered gold, regardless of what the title says. Those hits of piano, lovely. The first words are “My love is gone”, and the music just complements that melancholic vibe perfectly. Joakim has said in interviews this album is about not being young anymore, and instead being in a place where you can’t do all that stuff young people do, but you are not quite ready for that pipe smoking, rocking chair thing yet. “Is it forever?”, he wonders about the love being gone. The track is layered perfectly, different things coming over and going under each other to enhance that feeling. And at 3:50 he strikes a few blows as well. Do listen to this, major track, and there’s an album out there that goes with it. One of the better tracks of the year so far for my money.
