Sorry!

Track of the week:
‘Get Down, Stay Down’ by Tempo No Tempo

I don’t know why, but I really expected this to be a jangly guitar band. Never judge by the cover, eh? Instead what you get is a nifty bassline, some manipulated vocals (or lo-fi produced in any case) which bear some resemblance to Luke Jenner’s (The one who actually remained in The Rapture) voice though the pitch is decidedly less high. So some bass, some added sounds which to me sound rather like one instrumental or another taken from the Blues Brothers film, and some yelping voices that stay a bit in the background due to the way they recorded it (or how the microphone was set, or whatever). In any case, colour me surprised, and positively. It has a bit The Rapture in it actually, most of it dancey, sometimes a bit of rocky/experimental guitar, and during the ending the latter vibe takes over. Good track this, and I’m intrigued.

‘Low Shoulder’ by Toro Y Moi
So, Stereogum put his album in their top 25 to watch for next year, and it leaked just last week, so quite a bit of buzzing going on around this one. This is the tenth track of the album and it seems to me a bit less lo-fi vibe than the rest of the album. The synth is pretty clear on this one, but due to the way everything is layered it does sound a bit muddled. Actually, the bits where that clear synth takes top are definitely the best parts of the track. The rest is not really that gripping actually. If he goes for that dreamy vibe, that has been done to death this year, and the problem is it is done better as well. It is a sound that has been making waves, and I guess Toro Y Moi is late at a party that probably never really got that started in the first place.

‘Sweet Dreams’ by The Big Pink (BeyoncĂ© cover)
You know, I’m not writing for this site because I’m that much into pop, you know? So I’m happy to listen to all the obscure bands and their friends hoping to find a gem, and finding those takes up so much time that I rarely listen to the chart topping acts. With that said, of course I know BeyoncĂ©, and having been to many a party in which the room lights up when a track of hers is put on I have respect for her craft. What happens when “alternative” acts start to cover her, though? It is rather endearing when Antony Hegarty does it, not so much when The Big Pink take a stab at it. Though, on it’s own, it has a bit of an old grunge ballad vibe to it, and it’s not as horrible as I expected it would be. It’s rather decent, actually, so fair play to them.

‘Diminishing Returns’ by Ali Love (Luca C. & Brigante remix)
Oh my, does that opening beat take me back to that Mojito commercial which has been playing for way too long in way too many cinemas. I remember doing this track and not really liking it as it was too poppy. Luca C. & Brigante do good when they take his voice from its prominent position and coat it a bit so it doesn’t sound as clear and pop as it did in the original. The added music functions in much the same way as well, so when looking at it like that it certainly improved the track for me personally. With that said, it is rather caught in between an underground club vibe and something more happy and accessible, a juxtaposition which rarely enhances a track. Rather fetching, but it is not able to induce me with sheer excitement.

‘I Can Talk’ by Two Door Cinema Club (Golden Bug remix)
I did this track not too long ago, then it was a French Horn Rebellion remix, and now it is the Golden Bug remix which finds its way in my playlist. And they do not beat around the bush. They waste no time in introducing a bit of oomph to the song, which then is aided by some manipulated vocals as well. Very much a mix that will never be celebrated for its restraint. With my love for smooth remixes you would expect me not liking the track, but actually I kind of fancy bits of this remix. The middle section is a nifty build-up, after which surprisingly a rather understated beat makes an appearance. After they’ve expanded on it you expect a climax of some sorts to appear, but it never really lives up to that promise, and it makes it feel like the track kind of fizzles out. Decent, but you would have hoped for a bit more, and I cannot really see it set the dancefloor alight.

‘Engelska’ by For Disco DJ’s Only (Tyko Nordstrom Disco Dub)
Oh gosh, this is a slooooww burner, too bad it doesn’t burn as much as it is slow. I’m not really sure what I can say about this one except that this Tyko Nordstrom dub is quite dull. It’s got a bass in it, yeah, but not sure if you can qualify everything with a bass as disco. Oh well, it perhaps is disco, but it is so slow moving and quite constantly the same that I personally can’t see how I should derive pleasure from it.
