Album Review of Azari & III by Azari & III, written for Musos Guide
House has got quite a bit of background to it, firmly rooted as it is in the African-American and Queer movements of their times. So the genre is a bit anti-establishment, bit trying to challenge normative values. However, it is also physical, sweaty, nasty; men dancing in a hot club. It has something animalistic to it, it has got to move. That is good house to me, and it surely seems that it is that to Azari & III as well. This band from Canada seems to put the nasty back in there, at least the singles seem to be pointing in that direction. Case in point, both the song and the clip for ‘Hungry for the Power’ seem to embody both of the aforementioned qualities. The big question surely is not can they create house music (for the singles have already shown that) – the question is can they jot down a good album whilst cherishing that what makes house brilliant?
