Track: ‘Murder Weapon’ by Tricky (listen here)
Average grade: 6.1
Linda: It's daring at the very least to use the world's most famous (and probably also most sampled) bass line, combined with a Frank Sinatra intro. Daring, but it's probably also its downfall as it just makes me want to watch the Blues Brothers as I can't focus on the rather flimsy singing.
6.2 (5 points for the bass line)
Craig: I really like this song--great summer jam, perfect for a long drive. The sample he uses sounds very familiar, but I can't place it. Anybody know where it comes from? Plus, gunz r cool.
8.5/10
Ilse: From a lullaby into the James Bond theme into some electro track. I'm not entirely convinced.
6.0
Anna: Tricky's main sample here is a bit over-dominating and a tad overly familiar. But what irks me the most is the simplistic repetitive chorus of "shiny gun, shiny gun"; it's an award-winning atmosphere killer. The few moments Tricky's whispers are taking over, along with some adrenaline-pumping bridges, are the things that shine here. Hopefully the rest of the album will feed my appetite for some good ol' Tricky goodness.
5/10
Stef: Paying homage can be a wonderful thing. It can also be very distractive. Is it a bad song? No, and Tricky does a decent job on vocals and atmosphere. But that atmosphere is thwarted by the image of John Belushi and a young Dan Aykroyd in a police car being chased by the whole darn town.
4/10
