Our weekly look into the blogosphere where we talk about six tracks we found out about in the previous Wednesday-to-Wednesday seven-day period.
Track of the Week:
‘En Vill Hest’ by Casiokids (Prins Thomas remix)
I love Casiokids! Those five guys are absolute bonkers but in a very positive way. I’ve seen them perform three times or so and enjoyed myself thoroughly each time. Earlier this year they came with a lovely clip of this track, and now Prins Thomas is running away with it for a marathon nine minute slow disco showdown. There’s a very slow, throbbing disco bass in there to start it off which forms the spill for a good period of time. Slowly but surely more sounds are added and the contours of ‘En Vill Hest’ start to appear which start to dance on the canvas Prins Thomas has build so expertly. Because let’s make no bones about it, Prins Thomas is an absolute royalty (haha, ehrm) in this sort of disco thing. About four minutes in the vocals appear for the first time while the music throbs on. Absolute delightful summer jam with a slow throbbing disco sound as its basis and the Casiokids song to play with. Impressive stuff.

‘6669’ by Neon Indian (Aislyn remix)
Neon Indian has been garnering more and more attention this year (though I’m secretly looking more forward to the VEGA debut, a different moniker for the same artist). Aislyn takes the pace out of this one and focuses more on the aerial part of it, making it quite a delicious ride I find. It’s a bit more Fever Ray stylistically. Bit more based on escapism than on any sort of dancing you might do to the original Neon Indian tracks. The addition of the drums do enhance the feeling this song tries to evoke, and with a running time of five minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome. I think this is a very nice remix indeed.

‘Eat Flesh’ by Health (Crystal Castles remix)
Health has the delightful tradition to make a Disco version of their albums, which contains “disco” remixes of a whole host of the tracks on the original. I find that a terribly fun way to add some longevity to your music and show a whole different side of the material. Now, the title of the album suggests that those remixes would be disco, but you also know when you see Crystal Castles as the remixers, it just ain’t gonna get even close to it. Instead, prepare for some aerial voices, a whole barrage of noise, and a host of sounds seemingly coming from nowhere and with no purpose whatsoever. Also be prepared to have your hand at the volume control, because Crystal Castles delight in having some disparity in that department. So yeah, if you are expecting disco and if you like disco, then this probably isn’t a remix you’ll be having on repeat. Perhaps it is more a Crystal Castles/Health thing, so people liking those bands might rate this one higher.

‘We Are Ready When You Are’ The Krays feat. Ebony Bones
The Krays are a new team-up consisting of Yuksek and Brodinski, and for this track they’ve enlisted Ebony Bones on vocal duties. So be ready for some club action. And for me personally, it is a bit too clubby. The vocals are really the kind of thing I just will never be able to enjoy when sitting at home. They are screamy and just for pumping up the audience, which incidentally is also the thing this track wants to accomplish. So if you’re looking for something subdued look the other way, because this is probably more for the hard hitters amongst us.

‘Wall of Arms’ by Friends Electric
He, it actually sounds sped up, as if someone turned up the pitch on this one. It’s like Miike Snow on some drug that makes everything go twice as fast. With that said, it for some reason sounds very mainstream to me, something I would see on some national music channel here and go, ah, is this what the chart led kids are listening to these days? Which they aren’t, probably, but I’m not counting me in as a fan personally, so I hope they do find their niche somewhere. It is just too sped up for me personally, and the beat sounds too simple and geared to the casual listener more than to a music aficionado. And there’s nothing wrong with that if it were catchy or interesting, but to me personally it isn’t really.

‘Aquarium’ by Jamie Long
To be honest, I’ve no idea who Jamie Long is, but it’s all about discovering really, isn’t it? Turns out, after initial clear synth sounds that peaked my interest, he seems a sort of a lo-fi singer-songwriter type. A bit in the vein of Neon Indian and that kind of popular stuff that is coming up at the moment. Unfortunately I’m not a big fan of that grainy sound, and I actually did hope that it were just my boxes making that “noise lite”, but unfortunately it wasn’t. So it’s the track really, doing all that stuff. Sometimes the song goes into clear sound modus, which I enjoy so much more than that deliberate grain artists put over their music. It seems as if the drums have been mixed in that kind of way and that the rest is sans that drizzle, and those drums are used as canvas for the piano/synth to play on. In my personal opinion that doesn’t really work. http://hypem.com/track/1110132/Jamie+Long+-+Aquarium
