Crazy Zany Radio Sunday - 11th Dimension van Julian Casablancas

Het concept is heel simpel: een groep mensen luistert naar hetzelfde nummer en iedereen geeft z’n mening, alsof we samen in een kamer zitten en het nummer komt langs op de radio. Stein zei a bus is a bus is a bus, en sommige vonden het post-modernisme, andere vonden het onleesbaar. Sommige vinden Duchamp’s Fontein kunst, sommige vinden het onzin. Stein sloeg Duchamp’s neus eraf en zette het op zijn kop, en zij vond het hilarisch, en Duchamp een stuk minder. Kortom, iedereen vindt iets anders leuk of kunst of mooi. Dus vandaar hier zes meningen in zes stijlen, en zet jouw mening over het nummer vooral hieronder, of join the team voor deze column, the more the merrier! En ja, meestal zal iedereen het oneens zijn, maar daarom blijft muziek in flux, nietwaar?

Jox: It's hard to believe it's eight years since The Strokes saved indie rock'n'roll for the twenty-first century with breakthrough album This is It. And listening to this track, it's hard to believe Casablancas was a key member of that band. It kicks off well enough with a super exciting Vampire Weekend-esque intro. And then leads into nothingness. Or more precisely, leads into what sounds like a crap 8th or 9th track of a Strokes album. None of the excitement of Last Nite or 12:51 is here, nor any of the intriguing new directions Albert Hammond explored in hist solo efforts. This just sounds like a frustrated Stroke sinking into mediocrity to me.

Jon: Oh christ now I'm going to come over as the grumpy old sod for the second week in a row. Why are every man and his dog all of a sudden starting to sound like they've just stepped into an 80's time-warp. Wind things back a few years please. 1977 would be good, give us a raw edge, something to chew on. Who produced this? Pete Waterman?

Anna: I guess this could be qualified as a guilty pleasure; good thing I'm lacking the guilt gland. I enjoyed that shamelessly and thoroughly, and I ain't afraid to say it. I'm of the humble opinion that the value of such songs should be determined based on how much you enjoyed them. So, synth it up, Julian.

And since I know for a fact that the editor of this blog doesn't mind a bit of innocent and utterly legal speculation, who do you reckon would win in a solo off, Paul Banks or Julian Casablancas? I know who I'm 'speculating' my money on.

Linda: De man zingt het zelf al: "I need to go somewhere new fast". Nieuw ja, want hoewel dit misschien vernieuwend is voor de zanger van een gitaarband, heb ik het idee dat de rest van de wereld dit soort synth-lijntjes al heel wat vaker, en beter, heeft gehoord. Ik heb mijn Julian Casablancas liever met gitaren.
